Living room furniture layout: compare seating and walking routes

Plan the route through a living room alongside its seating. A useful comparison keeps the same furniture and changes one major arrangement at a time.

Record what the room must do

Decide how you use the room: conversation, watching a screen, reading or a combination. Mark entrances, windows and fixed features on a measured sketch before selecting new furniture.

The living room example includes a sofa, armchair, coffee table, rug, plant and floor lamp. Change the room dimensions first, then enter the actual footprint of each piece. Add a custom item for a fixed object you need to account for in the layout.

Treat the route through the room as part of the design

Follow the path from each entrance to a seat and through to the next doorway. Check it with people seated and with any moving furniture in use. A reclining sofa needs more space than its closed footprint suggests.

The app can flag room boundaries and overlapping furniture boxes, but it does not certify walking routes or model door swings. Use its warnings as prompts for a physical check rather than a pass/fail approval of the room.

Compare a sofa wall fairly

Save design A with your measured sofa on the long wall. In design B, move that same sofa to the adjacent wall. Keep its dimensions and price unchanged, then compare the entrance route, armchair position and view toward the screen.

Separate visual overlap from furniture collisions

Rugs intentionally sit beneath seating and tables. The planner allows this overlap. A coffee table overlapping the body of a sofa is a different situation and should be checked in the top-down view.

Select pieces individually, adjust their center positions and rotate them. Check both the 2D arrangement and 3D preview; perspective can make a tight area look more generous than it is.

Price only the changes you plan to make

Mark retained furniture as already owned. Enter your supplier prices for a new rug, table or sofa, and review the furniture total separately from flooring and wall work. An item with no entered price is not a free purchase.

Share the design snapshot or export a PNG for discussion. A shared snapshot is independent of the saved project, so later edits do not update copies already sent to someone.
