How this wall panel spacing calculator works
Start with the wall width, actual batten width and the number of clear spaces. The planner distributes equal gaps and estimates stock for decorative vertical battens and top and bottom rails.
Use your room and product measurements
- Choose the walls and panel height, then enter the actual batten width.
- Adjust the spacing and inspect the elevation around doors and windows.
- Enter stock length and board price, and review pieces, stock allowance and costs.
The calculation
Clear gap = [wall width − (number of gaps + 1) × batten width] ÷ number of gaps
On an uninterrupted 12 ft wall, five clear gaps and six 3 in battens leave 126 in for gaps: (144 − 18) ÷ 5 = 25.2 in each. Openings and rails change the individual cut pieces; inspect those separately in the elevation.
What to check before buying
This is a decorative batten layout, not structural design. Board estimates include a saw allowance and conservative stock packing. Adhesive, fasteners, backing, paint and wall preparation are separate.

Use the actual measured face width. A nominal board size can differ from the finished size and change every gap.
Is this a structural wall design tool?
No. It estimates decorative battens and rails. It does not assess framing, fixing strength, utilities or building requirements.
