UNDERSTAND YOUR ESTIMATE

How this paint calculator works

Paint quantity depends on the surface being painted, the number of coats and the coverage printed on the can. This planner subtracts measured openings and rounds purchases to whole one-gallon cans for each color.

Use your room and product measurements

  1. Set room length, width and height, then position each door and window.
  2. Assign Paint to the walls you want to include. Choose colors and include the ceiling only if it uses the same specification.
  3. Enter coats, coverage and extra allowance, then review the quantity for each color.

The calculation

Gallons = paintable area × coats × (1 + extra ÷ 100) ÷ coverage per gallon

A 16 × 12 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling has 448 sq ft of wall area. One 3 × 7 ft door and two 3 × 4 ft windows leave 403 sq ft. Two coats with 10% extra and an illustrative 350 sq ft per gallon need about 2.53 gallons, rounded to 3 one-gallon cans of one color.

What to check before buying

Coverage varies by product and surface. Primer, trim paint, preparation and tools are separate. Multiple colors are rounded separately. Screen colors are not manufacturer color matches.

Are doors and windows deducted?

Yes. Positioned openings are deducted from their painted walls. Walls assigned to wallpaper and included lower panel zones are excluded from the paint estimate.

Can I include the ceiling?

Yes. The ceiling option adds the floor-sized ceiling area using the default paint color and the same coats and coverage. Use a separate estimate for a different specification.
