Home office layout: compare desk position, storage and access

Use a measured office plan to compare desk orientations and storage positions. Check chair movement, cables and light in the actual room before choosing a layout.

Start with the equipment you actually use

Measure the desk, chair, bookcase and other furniture. Record the equipment on the desk and any drawers or pedestal units below it. Decide whether the room also needs space for visitors, printing or storage.

Open the home office example, set room dimensions in Walls & materials and update the pieces in Furniture & accessories. Add a second desk or custom item only if it is part of your real requirements.

Compare a wall-facing and room-facing desk

Save the wall-facing option as design A. Rotate and reposition the same desk for design B. Compare the chair’s route, access to shelves, outlet locations and the area visible behind you on video calls.

The visual model does not simulate glare, reflections, cable routing or workstation ergonomics. Check daylight at the proposed position at the times you normally work. Keep electrical and equipment requirements on your measured sketch.

Why desk area alone is not enough

A 5 × 2.5 ft desk has a 12.5 sq ft footprint. That excludes the chair while occupied, the space needed to stand up, open drawers and any route behind the chair. Inspect those activities separately instead of subtracting only 12.5 sq ft from the room area.

Make storage reachable in both options

Check whether you can open storage without moving the chair or blocking the doorway. Put regularly used items where the arrangement works during normal use, not just when every drawer is shut.

For a shared office, add the actual number of desks and chairs. The planner does not establish workplace compliance, individual accessibility needs or safe occupant capacity. Those decisions need appropriate professional and site-specific checks.

Keep the budget and design together

Mark existing furniture as owned and price the pieces you plan to buy. Compare wall and flooring work separately from equipment purchases; sample material prices are editable examples, not current supplier quotes.

Export the 3D scene to discuss the layout and save the project to revisit it. For separate offices, save each room and add copies in Connected spaces.
