Wallpaper roll calculation: drops, trim and pattern repeats
Dividing wall area by roll area can miss the material lost to full-height cuts and matching patterns. A drop-based estimate makes those assumptions visible.
Read the actual roll specification
Enter the physical width and length of one roll and the price for that same roll. Retailers may describe or price wallpaper using single-roll and double-roll conventions. Mixing a quoted price unit with a different physical roll size will distort the estimate.
Set pattern repeat to zero for a free-match product. For a straight-match repeat, enter the vertical repeat in inches. Half-drop, offset-match and mural products are outside this calculator’s pattern model.
Work out a full cut length
Use room height minus any included lower panel zone, then add top-and-bottom trimming allowance. The trim field is the total extra length for one drop, not an allowance at each end. If the product has a straight-match repeat, round this adjusted length up to the next whole repeat.
Divide roll length by this cut length and round down. That gives complete drops available from one roll. The planner flags a roll that cannot produce even one full-height drop.
Worked example: a free-match roll
An 8 ft wall plus 4 in total trim needs an 8.333 ft drop. A 33 ft roll yields 3 complete drops. The remaining roll length is not assumed to create another full-height drop.
Round each wall separately
For each wall, divide its width by the roll width and round up to whole drops. Add the counts for the walls assigned to wallpaper. This gives a conservative corner allowance rather than assuming a single unbroken strip layout around the entire room.
The planner adds and rounds up the spare allowance on each wall, then groups equal cut lengths and divides by complete drops per roll. Walls with different cut lengths do not share offcuts. Doors and windows are not deducted. Offcuts may help around some openings, but the tool does not promise that they will.
Worked example: a 16 × 12 ft room
With 20.5 in wide wallpaper, each 16 ft wall needs 10 drops and each 12 ft wall needs 8: 36 base drops. A 10% spare allowance rounded on each wall gives 40 drops. At 3 drops per roll, buy 14 rolls.
Confirm the final order with the supplier
Take the room measurements, opening sketch, roll dimensions and pattern specification to your supplier. Ask whether a different matching method or seam plan changes the required quantity.
The estimate excludes paste, lining paper, tools and wall preparation. Buy matching product batches where required, and confirm the supplier’s guidance before relying on leftover material for future repairs.
